All good adventures, no matter how meticulously planned, end up breaking out of the mold you so carefully crafted. Our Kiwi Tour ’11 was no different, and resulted in a much more exciting story to tell. While we weren’t able to explore New Zealand as much as we planned due to illness, that setback gave us the opportunity to see more of the south island than anticipated. The north island and the northern half of the south island have yet to be explored by the FJC Magazine crew, but that’s great since we now have a very good reason to go back.

We shot over 700 photos and 5 hours of video while in Aotearoa but unfortunately only a very small subset of our images will fit in this issue. Soon we’ll post many more of our photos on this website, so be sure to check it often latest releases. We are still working on editing some of the video down to a watchable movie and will release that as soon as possible.

For now, enjoy our thoughts and photos from one of the greatest adventures we’ve ever taken. We’re excited to share this with you, and hope to see many of you around the country (and world) in the years to come.
Until next time, Stay the Trail, Tread Lightly, Leave No Trace, Stay Safe, and HAVE FUN!

Fox Glacier ViewIf you’ve been following our Facebook or Twitter updates, you saw that we were delayed for a few days due to sickness. We ended up staying on the south island, and took some time to recover in Queenstown. We were able to do a few things before our forced down-time, and have been able to get out a couple of times in the last few days.

Although we made it to Franz-Josef Glacier, the weather wasn’t cooperating so the only way to get a decent view was to hike up to the face. It was an interesting hike and definitely worth it, but we really wish the weather would have been better.

Beautiful SkiesFor our last day in the Queenstown area we wanted to explore a little bit. After pouring over several maps, we decided to give Crown Range Road a try. As the highest sealed (paved) road in New Zealand, we were sure it would offer great views and lead us to interesting dirt tracks.

Ready for a little dirtThings don’t always go to plan, and we certainly found that out on Day 3 of the Kiwi Tour ’11. Our original plan was to make our way down to the Borland Lodge, where we would run Borland Road and hang out in the wilderness for a few days. Despite our best planning efforts, we really didn’t realize just how far out the Southland area of Borland Road is. To put it simply, it’s a journey!

Enroute to Southland we stopped for a bit in Queenstown and quite simply were swept away. Living in Colorado, we’re used to amazing mountains and great scenery, but we had no idea what Queenstown would hold. So after our short visit, and the ensuing 3 hour drive to Southland, we already realized plans may be changing.

Lake Pukaki, Mt. Cook in the backgroundOur second day in NZ started chilly and damp. The rain in Christchurch persisted, so after a quick stop at the grocery store for a few supplies, we headed toward Twizel.
We’ve seen photos and descriptions of the two large lakes on the way to Twizel, but no amount of planning could prepare us for these amazing wonders.

Arriving in Christchurch

We had a great time in Sydney, but frankly I’ve had enough hiking in the city for this trip. Bright & early this morning we caught the plane to Christchurch, with our mounds of luggage in tow.

We landed around 1:30 NZDT and after clearing biosecurity, we found a VooDoo Blue FJ Cruiser waiting for us in the parking garage. We got her loaded up and headed out to the hotel. While it took the GPS a few minutes to realize we were half way around the world, we were able to find the hotel (and drive on the left hand side) without any issues. By early afternoon the clouds parted just a little, and we were off on our first adventure.

Unlike many parts of Kiwi Tour ’11, we don’t have a set plan for our short time in Christchurch, so our destination was ‘those hills over there’. A few minutes later we were headed up Dyers Pass on the way to Governors Bay. Despite lingering cloud cover, the views were pretty fantastic. It’s clear to see that we’re in for a real treat on this trip!

Heading into Governors Bay Great views despite the cloud cover

Tomorrow we’re headed toward Twizel, and may get a chance to see Mt. Cook if the weather holds. Stay Tuned!
